Remembering 9/11

The terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, 2001 changed the nation and altered the course of events in the United States and around the world.  Most of you may be too young to truly remember that day: where you were, what you were doing, how you felt, and how it affected you.  Thus, what I would like you to do is facilitate a discussion regarding 9/11 with someone who does remember (i.e. your parents, an older sibling, an aunt or uncle, or a family friend etc.).  Ask them the following questions:
  • Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
  • How did you feel?
  • What was your immediate reaction?
  • Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
  • In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
After you have had this discussion, report back with your findings by responding to this blog post.  You have until Wednesday, September 14th to complete this assignment.

I asked my dad about 9/11. I asked him where and what was he doing when he found out about the terrorist attacks and he said he was at a job site in Frederick Town working on street lighting. He felt sadness for the innocent people who were killed in the attack. His immediate reaction was astonishment. What he remembered that day was that he met his foreman at his foreman's house so they could ride down to the job site, and after they finished their job, they were driving home and every gas station they passed was filled with huge longs of cars.

    Dad:Driving home from Gatlinburg.
    How did you feel?
    Dad:Shocked and in disbelief.
    What was your immediate reaction?
Dad:I can't believe this is happening.
Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
Dad:I remember it was our fastest drive home because we were listening to the radio and when we would lose a station we would drive faster to find a radio station to find out what all was happening.
In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
Dad:our sense of security has been lost.

I asked my dad about the day 9/11. I asked him where he was and what he was doing when he found out about the terrorist attacks. He replied by saying that he was in Frederick Town working on street lighting. He felt sorry for all of the innocent people that lost their lives. His immediate reaction was astonishment. That day he said he remembered meeting up with his foreman at his foreman's house so they could drive down to the job site. When he was done with his job, his foreman and him were driving home and every gas station they passed had huge, long lines of cars. I asked him how he thinks America has changed and he replied by saying that the airports are very strict with what you can bring on the plane. They have multiple areas of check-ins before you can board the planes. That was my discussion of what my dad remembered of the day 9/11.

My mom is answering the questions- they are provided in order.

    • “I was grocery shopping at Shop N Save when the checkout lady told me.”
    • “I was incredibly sad and scared that it was happening on American soil. I was worried, and I didn’t know where it was going to stop.”
    • “I wanted to go home and hug my children.”
    • “I was moved by how the New Yorkers were helping each other.”
    • “I think America has learned that we are vulnerable, and not the superpower we thought we were. We have implemented more stringent security measures in travel and banking as a result. I think Americans have become more compassionate and patriotic as well.”

My dad was at headquarters special operations command. Watching it live on TV. He was preparing for a briefing when someone mentioned come watch what is going on, on TV. He was in the central time zone at the time. He felt angry because he instantly knew it was a terrorist attack against the US. He was worrying where we would be going within the week, because his aircraft squadron was always sitting real-world alert. How quickly they shut-down all the aircrafts in the air. Also he has flown out of the two airports where the four airplanes hosting terrorist took off. How long the first couple of days were going to be because he knew he would not be going home right away. We are all more aware of what an organization like Al Qaeda is capable of. He still wishes that the rest of America would feel the commitment and sacrifice that the US military has fighting this war for the past 10 years. He thinks if they realized the shared sacrifice like those of World War 2, then Americans would realize how serious this war is to our way of life.

    I interviewed my mom.
Q:Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
A:I was at home taking care of my daughter.
    Q:How did you feel?
    A:I was shocked.
    Q:What was your immediate reaction?
A:At first I thought that it was an accident when the first plane hit and I was shocked at the terrible tragedy. Then when the second plane hit and I realized that it was on purpose I was even more shocked, angered, and was in disbelief that someone would do that to people that they didn't even know. It was such a cowardly way of making a statement.
Q:Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
A:Americans who never would normally talk to each other all of a sudden had so much in common. Everybody reached out to each other for information and comfort.
Q:In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
A:Well obviously travel has changed drastically. Its effected our economy (gas prices) and it's introduced a greater fear of Muslims in our country. I think it has divided us in some ways and united us in others.

My mom was volunteering at our church, when she a group of people gathered around a television. When she joined them, she was shocked. Her first reaction was complete shock. Then, she became very remorseful for the people that died. She thinks that America has lost its way sense 9/11. They've let the terrorists take away our comforts, values, and rights. We should not be content in our pathetic squabble of security but rather be brave and take charge just as the heroes did on 9/11.

When I asked my dad about 9/11 it took him a while to remember but then he told me what he remembers. Where were you and what do you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks? DAD: I was at home outside working on my car, when I found out about the attacks.
    How did you feel?
DAD: I felt anger, sadness, I didnt really know what to feel I was still rying to process everything.
    What was your immediate reaction?
DAD: My immediate reaction was I called my parents, then I called a friend of mine who was living in New York at the time.
Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
DAD: I remember, I just got off work, I was a Paramedic at the time, and I remember, I got a call around 2 O'clock that morning to go to a call it was a car accident, and it was a mini van with a mom and 4 kids in it and the van was hit by a drunk driver, and the only person that survived the crash was the drunk driver. And I remember sitting there doing CPR on one of the kids who looked like he was maybe 3 or 4 years old and I sat there for a good 45 minutes trying to get him to breath, and at that moment I realized it was going to be a bad day.
In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
DAD: Well we have really stepped up our game with securtiy, but really I dont think what we have done or will do is going to change the fact that they did this to us and there's no changing it.

Q; Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?

A(my dad); Sitting in the office at work, when somebody came in and said "Something happened in New York."

    Q; How did you feel?
A; I was very very angry, and by the second plane crash, I couldn't even believe what was happening.

Q; What was your immediate reaction?
A; I was confused, it was hard to think that a plane could crash into a building that tall.

Q; Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
A; For me, it was neat how united everybody was, like everybody in our neighborhood hung a flag out, and all those people in New York who were waiting to give blood. It's nice to know when the country is in trouble, there are people willing to dedicate time and help.

Q; In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
A; People are more aware now that there are countries that hate us, and America has done a lot to increase security, like in airports.

My sister was in her 4th grade class when her principal came in. My sister was very confused because she had no idea what a terrorist attack was and didn't know what the twin towers where. My sisters jaw dropped. My sister remembers her mom explaining about what had happened after she got back from school and she was scared that it was going to happen in St. Louis. My sister believes that the world became more compassionate and in tradigy are able to come together as one better than we used to be able to.

    Q:What was your immediate reaction?

Q:In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years in result?
